Artist statement
I am an actress. That means I am constantly learning more about human condition, the way others think. I love acting because every time I am presented with an opportunity, I am filled with a childlike joy and enthusiasm. At rehearsals, you can see it burst out of me; I jump into every project with full energy. What I do makes me happy, and my positive work affects those around me as well.
I realized I wanted to do this for the rest of my life during the rehearsal process of The Miracle Worker. We chose our favorite line from the show and lied down on the stage. Each of us said our lines out loud, staggered. And hearing the voices of my classmates, saying all these beautiful things, all the while feeling the stage beneath me - I was overwhelmed with a sense of inevitability, of belonging. This was where I’m meant to be.
The integrity in my training (and my personal process,) when I receive a role is unquestioned. I begin by reading the script several times to make my discoveries. I seek out, try to find honesty in the story. I play with levels, ask hard questions. I have fun, play with the meaning, find my perspective. All, simply, to find myself within my character, and lose myself in their story.
Nothing showcases this process quite like my role in A Streetcar Named Desire, as Blanche Dubois. Playing that character, reading her script, I feel like I could experience it all a thousand times more and still find something new and beautiful each time. I savored being on that stage, telling her story. The moment that showed my successful process was at the end, after she is comforted by the Doctor. Slowly being lead offstage, there was this resounding, unbreakable, silence, as an audience was captured in awe, changed.
These moments are why acting is my passion.
Why I love it.
